Roughout Leather Care Guide

Roughout and nubuck leathers are known for their textured, matte appearance and rugged character. You can identify them by their soft, slightly fuzzy surface — unlike oil-tanned leather, they are not oily to the touch and have a drier feel. Because these leathers are more sensitive to dirt and moisture, regular care is important. Red Wing’s 3-step routine — clean, condition, and protect — helps maintain the texture, color, and durability of your boots over time

01. Clean

Use the Eraser Bar from the Roughout/Nubuck Cleaner Kit on soiled area of footwear. If stain persists, wet Eraser Bar and repeat. Allow leather to dry and use the Bristle Brush to restore the leather's nap.

02. Condition

Lightly apply Mink Oil to Muleskinner Leather. Mink Oil will darken leather and should only be used sparingly. Allow the leather to dry. All other Roughout and Nubuck leathers do not require conditioning.

03. Protect

Lightly mist footwear with Leather Protector six to eight inches away from the leather in a sweeping motion. Leather Protector provides a shield against dirt and moisture. It will not darken footwear.
